Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmad is the current Chief of Defence Forces Pakistan Armed forces. He became Pakistan’s first Chief of Defense Forces on December 5, 2025, after the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee was abolished and a unified command structure was put in place. President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari appointed him as Chief of Defence on the advice of Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif prime minister of Pakistan. Syed Asim Munir belongs to the 17th course of the Officers Training School (OTS) in Mangla and was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. He earned the Sword of Honour on completion of his training. Early in his service, he was posted to Saudi Arabia, where he memorised the Quran and became a hafiz. As a brigadier, he commanded troops under the Force Command Northern Areas as well as an infantry brigade in Pakistan’s Northern Areas. He became Director-General of Military Intelligence in early 2017 and received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in March 2018. On 25 October 2018, he was appointed Director-General ISI, a position he held until 16 June 2019—one of the shortest tenures in the agency’s history. Afterward, he served as corps commander of XXX Corps. From 2021 until November 2022, he worked at GHQ as the Quartermaster General.
