Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the Opposition Leader of National Assembly of the Pakistan. He assumed office from 16th January 2026. Politically he is affiliated with Pashtunkhwa Milli Awani Party PKMAP. The position of opposition leader in the National Assembly fell vacant after Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Omar Ayub Khan was disqualified in the May 9 cases. He was elected member of National Assembly from NA-266 Killa Abdullah & Chaman. Mehmood Khan Achakzai He is a senior politician and practices Pashtun nationalist politics. He was first elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly from the Qila Abdullah, Chaman constituency in bye elections 1974. He was first elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 1990 general election. He was then elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 1993 general election, 2002 general election, 2013 general election and 2024 general election. formally started his political career from his student days with the Pashtun Students Organization, which later became the Pashtunkhwa Students Organization. Mahmood Khan Achakzai always played a leading role in political democratic alliances. He remained steadfast in his principled stand in the democratic movement including MRD movement, APDM, Poonam, PDM and never compromised with anyone on the supremacy of the constitution.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai is born on 14 December 1948 in village of Inayatullah Karez, Gulistan, in Balochistan’s Killa Abdullah Khan. He began his early education in Gulistan, completed his F.Sc. at Science College, Quetta, and later earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering, Peshawar. He is the son of Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai, a politician. Mahmood Khan Achakzai is married and has three sons, Atal Khan Achakzai, Asal Khan Achakzai, Azal Khan Achakzai, and two daughters.
